China's position in ammonium sulfate supply

China is one of the world's largest production and export bases for ammonium sulfate. For an international buyer, that means a deep supply base, established export routes from the main ports, and a competitive market with several parties able to quote.

One structural feature of this market is worth understanding before you plan a purchasing programme: most ammonium sulfate is a by-product of other industrial production rather than the output of dedicated synthesis. Supply therefore tracks the operation of other plants, which moves for reasons unrelated to fertilizer demand.

The practical consequences for a buyer:

• Availability of a specific particle size or analysis can tighten independently of price. A grade that was available last month may not be available now on the same terms.
• Working with a supplier who can access several production sources reduces exposure to a single plant's maintenance schedule or outage.
• A stated volume profile can be planned around. A series of unannounced spot requirements is harder to serve and is priced accordingly.

The export process, step by step

Stage 1 — Specification and contract

Grade, form, particle size if relevant, packaging, quantity, trade term, destination and document requirements are agreed and put in writing, together with price, validity, payment mechanism and delivery window.

This stage is largely under your control. A complete specification at the first enquiry compresses it; a vague one stretches it into rounds of clarification.

Stage 2 — Sourcing and allocation

Confirming that material meeting the required specification is available for the required window. For a repeat programme this is planning across a season; for a spot requirement it is a point-in-time answer.

Stage 3 — Production, packing and inspection

The packing run: bag production or selection, printing if private label is required, and the packing itself. Inspection, where required, is sequenced in this window — which is why it has to be raised at the enquiry stage rather than added later.

Stage 4 — Documentation

Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of analysis for the lot shipped, technical data sheet, certificate of origin and bill of lading. Where payment is by letter of credit, the documents are prepared to match the credit exactly.

Stage 5 — Loading and shipping

Container booking and loading, or bulk vessel nomination and loading at the port of loading. Then departure, and the documents released against your agreed payment terms.

Packaging for export

Four formats are quoted: 25 kg bags, 50 kg bags, jumbo bags (FIBC) and bulk cargo. Bag material, liner, printing and palletisation are agreed per order.

Loading quantity depends on packaging, container type and shipping requirements — bag dimensions, the palletisation decision, the container's internal volume and the road weight limits on the inland leg all change the answer. Container and bulk shipping

Bagged material ships in containers — the standard route for trial orders, distribution programmes and destinations without bulk discharge facilities. Large-volume programmes can be arranged as bulk vessel cargo where the loading port and destination discharge facilities allow it.

We quote FOB, CFR or CIF. Tell us the trade term you want to work on and your destination port, and the quotation is issued on that basis — FOB from the Chinese loading port, or CFR / CIF through to the destination port if you would rather we handle the freight leg.

Loading ports — Qingdao and Tianjin

Ammonium sulfate loads at Qingdao and Tianjin. Which of the two applies to your order depends on the production source and the sailing schedule at the time of booking, and it is named in the quotation and confirmed in the sales contract.

If you have a preference between the two, say so when you raise the enquiry — port preference affects the inland movement and the vessel options, so it is better settled before the quotation is issued than after.

Documentation

The key point for export buyers: the COA should be the manufacturer's own document for the lot shipped, and it should be available before the balance payment.

What international buyers should verify

• Import requirements in your own market. Duties, registration, labelling and biosecurity or phytosanitary rules are set by your country, not by the exporter. They change. Confirm them with your customs broker or the relevant authority before you commit to a shipment.
• Your own specification, in writing. A specification that is not written down cannot be enforced. See the Specification Guide.
• The entity you are contracting with. Check that the legal name on the invoice matches the entity you contracted with, and that the bank account name matches it too.
• The loaded quantity for your actual packaging and route — before you commit to a downstream sale.
• The document list against your payment instrument. If a letter of credit is involved, check it line by line before it is opened.

Lead time

Rather than one number, ask three questions: how long the specification and contract stage needs, what the current allocation position is for your grade and form, and what the shipping position is from the loading port. The third is often the binding constraint, and during peak fertilizer season vessel space can matter more than production.
