Ammonium Sulfate Applications
Ammonium sulfate delivers nitrogen and sulfur together. How it is specified, packed and applied depends on which of three broad uses it is going into.
What changes between them
The chemistry is identical in all three cases. What changes is the specification a customer buys against — and, for blenders and producers, the physical form.
Straight fertilizer
Applied directly to the soil as a source of ammonium nitrogen and sulfate sulfur. The acidifying effect is useful on alkaline soils and needs managing on acid ones.

Nutrient behaviour, common to all uses
Whatever the end use, the same two nutrients are being supplied, and they behave the same way in the soil.
Ammonium nitrogen
Ammonium nitrogen does not take the volatilisation pathway that surface-applied urea does, and because the ammonium ion is positively charged it is held on the soil exchange complex rather than immediately leached. Soil bacteria subsequently nitrify it to nitrate, which is mobile.
Sulfate sulfur
Sulfate is the form plants absorb directly. Elemental sulfur has to be oxidised in the soil first, so it acts more slowly. The trade-off is that sulfate is mobile and can be leached, which makes application timing matter.
Acidification
Nitrification releases hydrogen ions, so ammonium sulfate acidifies soil over time. On alkaline soils that is an advantage; on acid soils it requires lime management.
The appropriate rate, timing and product fit for a particular field depend on soil analysis, crop, climate and local practice. Take local agronomic advice before specifying an application.
