Granular vs Crystalline Ammonium Sulfate

The chemistry is identical. The physical form is not — and that difference decides whether your blend stays together and whether your spreader works.

A buyer new to ammonium sulfate sometimes assumes that granular and crystalline grades are different products. They are not. Both are ammonium sulfate, (NH4)2SO4, and both are traded under the nominal analysis 21-0-0-24S.

The difference is entirely physical, and it determines what you can do with the material.

The same chemistry, two forms

Crystalline (also called standard or fine grade) is ammonium sulfate as it leaves the production process — a fine, white to off-white crystalline solid. It dissolves quickly.

Granular is the same material processed into coarser, more uniform particles. The nutrient analysis is the same. What changes is the size and consistency of the particle.

That is the whole distinction. Everything that follows flows from it.

Why particle size matters more than it looks

If you are selling ammonium sulfate as a straight product, particle size is largely a handling question. If you are blending it with other fertilizers, particle size becomes a technical requirement — and this is where most of the practical difference between the two forms lies.

Segregation in blends

Granular blends are made by physically mixing different fertilizer particles. During handling — loading, transport, pouring, spreading — a mixture of particles of different sizes and densities does not stay evenly mixed. The larger particles tend to roll to the outside of a pile; the smaller ones settle. The result is a blend that leaves your plant with the right analysis and arrives at the field with an uneven one.

The standard defence is to match particle sizes across the blend. If the ammonium sulfate in the mix is a fine crystalline powder and the other components are 2–4 mm granules, the mix will separate. This is the primary reason blenders specify granular ammonium sulfate.

Spreading behaviour

Mechanical spreaders are set up for a particular particle size. Fine material behaves differently in a spinner: it may be thrown further, drift as dust, or feed inconsistently. Granular material feeds and spreads in a more predictable pattern.

Dust and caking in handling

Fine crystalline material generates more dust in handling and is more prone to caking under humidity. Coarse granules flow more freely through hoppers, elevators and bagging lines. Where a plant handles large tonnages, this affects throughput and housekeeping.

Dissolution

Here the crystalline form has the advantage. Fine crystals dissolve fast, which suits fertigation, solution preparation and processes where rapid incorporation is required. Granular material dissolves more slowly — usually an advantage in the field, where slower release is desirable, and a disadvantage where rapid dissolution is needed.

How to decide

Work backwards from the point of use.

If you are a blender or an NPK producer: Specify granular, and specify the particle size range your blend requires. Then check that the supplier’s material actually meets it — do not accept a generic description of “granular”. Review the specification against your blend design before you commit.

If you are applying directly with mechanical equipment: Granular is normally the right choice. Confirm that the granule size suits your spreader settings.

If you are supplying agricultural distributors: Granular is generally easier for them to handle and re-bag, and it stores better in humid conditions. Crystalline is still widely sold as a straight fertilizer and may be cheaper — ask your customers which they expect, because in many markets the preference is local and specific.

If you are using the material in solution or in a process: Crystalline, unless the process specifically requires a coarse grade.

If you are buying for an industrial application: The answer depends entirely on the process. Take the specification from the process requirement rather than from an agronomic grade description — and tell the supplier which parameter is critical.

What to specify when you order

Regardless of form:

  • Grade and analysis — nominal 21-0-0-24S, confirmed per lot on the COA
  • Form — granular or crystalline, stated explicitly
  • Particle size distribution — if relevant to your process, state the range and the acceptable tolerance
  • Moisture and free acid — lot-specific; confirm against your requirement

A note on price

Granular material normally carries a processing cost that crystalline does not, so the two forms do not usually price identically. When comparing offers, make sure you are comparing the same form. A quotation for crystalline material is not a cheaper version of a granular offer — it is a different product.
