Ammonium Sulfate Specification Guide
A specification is only useful if it describes what the material actually has to do. Here is how to write one that does.

Most specification disputes in ammonium sulfate trade come from the same source: a specification that does not say enough. “Ammonium sulfate 21-0-0-24S” identifies the product. It does not define the material you need, and it leaves every parameter that varies — moisture, particle size, free acid — unaddressed.
Here is how to write a specification that actually decides something.
Start with the analysis, then state the basis
The grade analysis is the first line, and it is nearly always quoted as nominal: 21% nitrogen, 24% sulfur.
The problem is that a percentage means nothing without a basis. The same cargo can be reported as:
- Dry basis — measured after removing moisture
- As received — measured on the material as it is
Dry-basis figures are higher for the same material. A three-tenths difference in a nitrogen figure is more often a basis difference than a quality difference.
So state the basis. “Nitrogen 21% minimum, dry basis” is a specification. “Nitrogen 21%” is a number that will be argued about.
For sulfur there is a second ambiguity: sulfur can be declared as elemental sulfur (S) or as sulfate (SO4), and the numbers differ substantially for identical material. Confirm the convention in writing. See Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0-24S Explained for the detail.
Decide minimums, maximums and ranges
Different parameters call for different forms of limit:

Writing a nutrient content as a “typical” rather than a minimum is a specification that cannot be enforced. If it matters, make it a minimum.
Specify the physical form explicitly
“Ammonium sulfate” without a form statement leaves the supplier free to ship either crystalline or granular material — and the two are not interchangeable for most uses.
- For blending and mechanical spreading, you need granular, and you need the particle size range.
- For solution and rapid-dissolution applications, you need crystalline.

Particle size: specify a distribution, not a number
This is where most blending specifications are lost. Two materials both described as “2–4 mm” can have very different distribution curves, and it is the distribution — not the nominal range — that determines whether a blend holds together.
A useful particle size clause states:
- The reference sieve sizes
- The percentage passing and retained at each
- The acceptable tolerance
- The method of determination
If you do not have a sieve specification of your own, ask the supplier for theirs and compare it against the particle size of the other components in your blend. That comparison is the test that matters.
Reference the documents
The specification should say which documents govern:
- Technical data sheet (TDS) — describes the product in general: properties, handling, storage. It is the reference for what the product is.
- Certificate of analysis (COA) — describes the specific production lot shipped. It is the reference for what you actually received, and it should be issued by the manufacturer for that lot.
A specification that names these documents, and says which one governs in the event of a question, removes an entire class of argument.
Confirmed per lot: the moisture, free acid, particle size distribution and bulk density applying to your cargo are declared on the Technical Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis issued for the production lot. The clauses that prevent disputes
Beyond the parameters themselves, four clauses do most of the work:
1. Sampling and analysis method. Who takes the sample, and by which method? Analysis results differ between methods, so an unstated method is an unstated specification.
2. What happens if the material falls outside specification. Rejection, price adjustment, replacement, or acceptance with a note — decide in advance rather than during a claim.
3. Which analysis governs. The pre-shipment COA, or an independent analysis at discharge? Both are legitimate; the contract should say which.
4. Tolerance. Where parameters are stated as ranges, state whether the ends are included and what tolerance applies.
