Ammonium Sulfate by Production Source
The chemical formula is the same. The product properties are not — and the production route is usually the reason why.

On a specification sheet, ammonium sulfate is ammonium sulfate: (NH4)2SO4, the same compound every time. In commercial trade, however, most ammonium sulfate is a by-product of another industrial process — and the properties of the material actually shipped depend heavily on which process produced it.
This guide sets out the main production routes and the points worth confirming before you buy. It does not quote figures for any specific supplier’s material; those come from the applicable specification and certificate of analysis.
Why the source matters
Ammonium sulfate is produced through several industrial processes. Although the chemical formula is the same, product properties can vary depending on:
- the production route — the process that generated the ammonium sulfate stream
- the downstream processing — crystallisation, drying, screening, granulation, anti-caking treatment
- the quality-control system of the individual plant
Two suppliers offering “ammonium sulfate fertilizer grade” can therefore be offering materials that differ in nitrogen assay, colour, moisture, free acid, insoluble matter and particle form. The grade name alone does not settle those differences.
Caprolactam by-product
Caprolactam production generates an ammonium sulfate stream that is frequently recovered as a high-quality crystalline product.
Typical considerations when buying:
- nitrogen assay — crystalline material from this route is commonly 21% minimum
- colour — commonly white to off-white
- moisture
- free acid
- particle form — usually crystalline when sold as produced
Because of its colour and assay, this material is often specified for higher-value agricultural markets and for buyers who need a consistent, low-colour product. It is also the feedstock that gives granular ammonium sulfate its higher nitrogen figures when used alone.
Coke / coal chemical by-product
Coke-oven ammonia recovery, followed by reaction with sulfuric acid, produces ammonium sulfate as a by-product of coke and steel operations.
Typical considerations when buying:
- colour — can be grey, off-white or darker; some material carries visible carbon or iron contamination
- nitrogen assay — commonly lower than caprolactam-origin crystal
- impurities — including insoluble matter and free acid
- moisture
- particle size
Coke-oven by-product is widely traded and can be entirely fit for purpose, particularly in price-sensitive markets and for bulk blending. It is not automatically inferior to material from another route — but the specifications do differ, and the intended end use should drive which one is acceptable.
Flue-gas desulfurisation
Flue-gas desulfurisation (FGD) processes can yield ammonium sulfate as a recovered product.
Typical considerations when buying:
- purity
- moisture
- particle size
- trace components dependent on the flue-gas stream
Product properties depend on the specific process and the downstream treatment applied. Where a buyer’s process is sensitive to trace components, the specification must be agreed against the actual source.
Other chemical-process by-products
A number of other chemical processes — including acrylonitrile and other petrochemical routes — also generate ammonium sulfate streams, and newer sources continue to appear.
Product properties depend on the specific production process and downstream treatment.
For these sources, the practical questions are the same as for any other: what is the assay, what are the impurity levels, and how consistent is the supply over time? A by-product stream follows the output of its parent process, so availability can move with the main product’s production cycle rather than with ammonium sulfate demand.
What this means for a specification
Because the source drives so many of the properties, a specification written around the grade notation alone is incomplete. State the parameters that matter to your process, and confirm them against the actual production source.
Across all sources, a buyer should normally confirm:
- nitrogen assay — stated as a minimum, with the form and source
- sulfur — stated as S or as SO4, and which basis
- moisture
- free acid
- insoluble matter
- particle size distribution — where relevant
- colour and appearance — where the market requires it
For export orders, the applicable product specification and COA should be confirmed according to the buyer’s intended use.

Granular material is a blend of sources
Granular ammonium sulfate is not a separate production route. It is made by compacting a blend of caprolactam-origin crystal and other by-product ammonium sulfate into granules.
That is why the guaranteed nitrogen figure for granular material is 20.5% minimum — the blend contains lower-assay by-product material. Granular product that assays consistently above 21% is made solely from caprolactam crystal.
This also explains why colour and impurity results can vary between granular lots: they follow the mix of sources used in the compaction run.
